End-of-term exams, last-minute Christmas shopping and wondering what the hell you’ve done for the past 12 months? As wonderful as December can be with Christmas and all, it can be a tad stressful too. To make sure you actually enjoy the most magical time of the year, we got in touch with DesignMyNight for the best things to do in December. Whether you hit up Winterland, a festive BYOB pop-up in London, or unwind with a screening of your favourite Christmas movie at a secret cinema - here’s everything you need to do this month.
1. Let’s Get Christmessy Brunch - London
Sure, there’s nothing like a dinner with lashings of gravy and pigs in blankets to get you revved up for Christmas, but you can get into the festive spirit another way this December: Let’s Get Christmessy Brunch. Held at Bounce in Shoreditch, trust us when we say this ain’t no ordinary weekend shindig. Expect endless prosecco, cranberry spritzers, Christmas-themed pizzas and ping pong across two hours. Games Gurus - handpicked by Santa himself - will also be hanging around to make sure you’re having all the fun.
2. Pop Up Screens - London
Is Christmas even Christmas without a screening of your favourite movie? Instead of vegging out in front of the TV this year, go in search of Pop Up Screens. This super cute cinema is hidden from the masses and, in true Narnian fashion, you’ll need to clamber through an unassuming wardrobe to find it. When you do, you’ll be met with a magical wonderland covered in blankets of snow and a bar that serves festive mulled wine. Showing everything from Home Alone to The Grinch, it’s definitely up there with the best things to do in December.
3. Winterland - London
Apart from the North Pole, we reckon Winterland is one of the most Christmassy places on earth. And unlike the North Pole, you won’t need a plane ticket for this date-perfect pop-up. Tucked away in Fulham, Winterland has an enchanted forest with cute cabins, long feasting tables, riverside igloos and it’s BYOB every day except Saturday. All that aside, this place is like one giant playground too, with curling lanes, mini golf and prosecco pong.
4. Burlesque and Bingo Christmas Special - London
Still think that bingo’s a game for your gran? Then you clearly haven’t been to one of the UK’s ramped-up events. Try Burlesque and Bingo Christmas Special taking place in one of East London’s coolest venues, Rolling Stock in Shoreditch. Hosted by Mr Christmas Cheer (with some help from his Reindeer Keepers), this event is going to figure out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice; you and your pals are in for one wild night of bingo calling and burlesque.
5. Winter La La Land - London
Last Days of Shoreditch is back with a brand new pop-up for December, and there’s a lot more than free entry to get excited over. Boasting roaring fire pits, Ernest Hemingway-inspired cocktails and its very own dance floor, this place has everything you need for an epic night out in East London. Food-wise, there’s festive poutine and plenty of bizarre buns from Cheeky Burger. Order Le Venison au Chocolat; this bad boy comes doused in chocolate sauce and is sandwiched in between a buttery croissant bun.
6. Christmas Wreath Making With Aspall Cyder - London
In the bad books with the folks over some less-than-perfect grades? Earn back brownie points and book a Christmas-wreath making workshop so you don’t go home empty-handed after term ends. You’ll get to learn all about mistletoe from the orchards on the night too, and there will be plenty of hot mulled cyder tasters from Aspalls to get your creative juices flowing.
7. Ultimate Power Christmas Special - Manchester
If you’ve been blaring ‘All I Want for Christmas’ for the past couple of weeks, you will want to get a ticket to Ultimate Power Christmas Special in Manchester Ritz. Hailed as ‘the world’s best power ballad club night’, their usual playlist will take a back seat for one with a festive twist on the 15th December. Grab a ticket and get ready to foot stomp to some of the best Christmas tunes out there, and yes, Mariah-style warbling is heavily encouraged.
8. Digbeth Après Ski - Birmingham
Birmingham might not be the first place you consider for a December holiday, but The OId Crown is bringing mountain fun straight to the city. The quirky pub has transformed its beer garden into a cool ski lodge for December and it’s as good as the real thing. Decked out with pine trees, ski racks, piste maps and actual falling snow, the pop-up will fool you into thinking you’re halfway up a snow-covered mountain in Alpe d'Huez. Promising festive cocktails and an alpine-inspired food menu, it’s an absolute must-visit.
9. Prohibition Tradition Experience - Brighton
With Christmas just around the corner, it’s probably wise to have some cocktail recipes in your arsenal. Cue Brighton’s Prohibition Tradition Experience. This secretive cocktail masterclass will see you through a journey of forbidden cocktails, bootleggers and quality spirits from the ‘20s. Lasting two hours, you’ll walk away with some of the best cocktail knowledge in the business to impress your family and your friends.
10. Dread Before Christmas - Glasgow
Dread is known as one of the scariest experiences in the UK, and they’re bringing a maze of horror to Glasgow this December, but with a sinister Christmas twist. Think you’ve got what it takes to survive? Book through DesignMyNight and you can get two tickets for the price of one, which includes the experience, a complimentary drink each and loaded fries at Drury Street Bar & Kitchen if/when you make it out alive.
