Whether you’ve been preparing for Christmas since Halloween or you’re more of a ‘no festive songs before the 12th’ kind of person, I’d put money on the fact that a visit to a Christmas market is on the agenda for December. Here are some of the ones I’ve tried, tested and recommend.

1. Nottingham

There’s always something going on in Nottingham’s Market Square, from a beach in summer to a fun fair in autumn. Its Old-England themed Christmas market that takes over every November is by far its biggest attraction though. Live music, a 60ft tall Christmas tree and the first-ever ice bar in The Midlands are just some of what there is to see.

2. Edinburgh

This one might be a bit more of a trek depending on where in the country you live but it’s worth it. The festive markets held in Edinburgh’s historic city centre are renowned for their food and crafts. There’s plenty to explore in the city itself too, including Edinburgh Castle and its infamous dungeons.

3. Lincoln

More than 280 stalls set up shop in Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter each Christmas, selling everything from gifts to decorations. There’ll also be a Lantern Parade on December 14th and a programme of festive-themed theatre and pantomime in the run-up to the big day this year.

4. Winchester

Winchester’s Christmas market has a reputation for being one of the best in Europe. Half a million people visit every year to see its open-air ice rink and browse what the British stall holders have to offer. The nativity scene is the perfect spot for a festive themed Insta post too!

5. London

London goes all out for most occasions and Christmas is no exception. Its Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park combines all the usual stalls, food and festivities with a Circus Megadrome, Giant Wheel, and a dedicated workshop for St Nick himself. Don't forget Winterland too!
