Things I wish I knew when I started university

For many of us, starting university is the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Meeting new people, living independently and discovering a new city are just some of the new experiences that await. But for that very reason, a lot of pressure can be put on students and we can forget to enjoy the time we have. To help put your mind at ease, I’ve listed a few things I wish I had known when I first started university to help make your time there the best it can be:

It’s normal to feel nervous

Your first day moving to university can be quite intimidating. After saying goodbye to your family you’re officially living on your own, and with all the new people you’re going to meet it’s easy to feel anxious in your new environment. However, chances are that everyone else you meet will be feeling the same way, so don’t be afraid to speak out about how you’re feeling to your new housemates, your family back home or even the University if you’re feeling really homesick. Everyone is in the same boat.

Be open-minded

You’ve definitely heard this one before, but university really is the best time in your life to try new things. Whether that be joining societies (or making your own), attending student events or running for course rep, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there to things you may not have even considered before. Not only will it help you meet some more friends, but you might figure out that you have a hidden passion for something you never even knew existed.

Explore where you are

This might be an obvious one, but whilst you’re spending the next few years at university why not take the opportunity to explore? It’s easy to fall into the student bubble and only focus on the areas you visit every day, but why to venture to some of nearby cities or areas? Not to mention, it’s a great bonding experience for you and your new friends.

Don’t worry about everyone else

Everyone tells you that university is the best time of your life; that’ll you meet your best friends, find yourself and figure out exactly who you’re supposed to be. But this prophecy you’re expected to fulfil can put a lot of pressure on your experience! Seeing images of your mates with their new friends on social media can make you start questioning your own time at university, but as the old saying goes: don’t compare yourself to Instagram. Everyone is figuring it out together, so take it at your own pace and don’t force your experience. Just enjoy it.
