Oh Canada!
Just in case you needed something to watch this weekend, here are some of the best shows that'll have you saying "I AM A PROUD CANADIAN" regardless of whether or not you still live there. So go out and be your best Canadian self this July 1st.
1. Schitt's Creek
Suddenly broke, the formerly filthy-rich Rose family is reduced to living in a ramshackle motel in a town they once bought as a joke: Schitt's Creek. Applauded for it's representation, Schitt's Creek is one of the funniest shows of 2018.
2. Strange Empire
In 1869 on the Alberta-Montana border, the women fight to survive and to raise their families. A little darker than some of the other's on this list, it's only one season so you can finish it pretty quickly.
3. Travelers
A federal agent tracks four people who suddenly seem to possess entirely new personalities, leading to a startling discovery about humanity's future. Although not set in Canada, it's an international venture between Netflix and Canadian specialty channel Showcase so you can celebrate the camaraderie between nations as well.
4. X Company
Set in World War II, "X Company" follows the adventures of five young recruits as they train as agents on the shores of Lake Ontario called Camp X. If you're looking for a spy thriller, this is it.
5. Degrassi
What's a list about Canada without Degrassi? A teen drama that follows the lives of a group of teenagers who lived on or near De Grassi street in Toronto. Also known as the place where Drake got his start. It's still going strong with the latest iteration on Netflix.
6. Murdoch Mysteries
Based on the novel series by Maureen Jennings, Murdoch Mysteries follows Toronto detective William Murdoch as he tries to solve cases during 1895. Basically he's the Sherlock Holmes of Canada.
7. Orphan Black
The series focuses on Sarah Manning, a woman who assumes the identity of one of her fellow clones, Elizabeth Childs, after witnessing Childs's suicide. Heralded for the topics it touched on, Orphan Black was beloved by many Sci-fi fans well after its cancellation.
8, Letterkenny
The show stars Keeso and Nathan Dales as Wayne and Daryl, two friends living in the small town of Letterkenny, Ontario. pisodes deal with life in a small town, amongst various different types of people and is an expansion of the webseries of the same name.
Bonus: SCTV
Basically the Canadian version of SNL that ran from 1976-1984. Some of the sketches are up on YouTube and you should check them out if you want to see the likes of Rick Moranis, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Martin Short, and Dave Thomas.
