• Senator Amy Klochubar (D- Minnesota) announced that she is running for president in 2020.
• Senator Elizabeth Warren (D- Massachusetts) announced that she is officially running for president in 2020 after announcing several weeks ago that she was launching an exploratory committee. She has hired her campaign manager and chief of staff.
• Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has issued an apology after echoing anti-semitic stereotypes in a Tweet.
• A judge has voided Paul Manafort’s plea deal after determining that he “intentionally” lied to investigators, breaching his plea deal.
• FEMA administrator Brock Long is resigning after being criticized for misusing government resources and mishandling Hurricane Maria. He announced he was stepping down to spend more time with his family.

Pop culture

• The Grammy Awards were this weekend. Here are some highlights, and here are our highlights.
• The trailer for the upcoming Aladdin movie was released and the internet is loving (or hating?) it.
• A character on Disney Channel’s show Andi Mack came out as gay, making him Disney Channel’s first openly gay character.
• Cardi B became the first woman to win the “Best Rap Album” Grammy as a solo artist. After she got criticism for winning over the late Mac Miller, she deactivated her Instagram account for two days. She then returned to announce a collaboration with Bruno Mars.
• After being arrested by ICE for being from Britain, rapper 21 Savage has been released from ICE custody and is awaiting a deportation hearing. ICE has dropped the aggravated felony charge against him.

Humanity

• Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is using email screenshots to claim that the National Enquirer tried to blackmail him with his own dick pics. The National Enquirer is denying it.
• The Justice Department has sued to prevent the first heroin injection site from opening in Philadelphia. The intention of this site would be to prevent deaths by overdose and limit the spread of HIV through used needles.
• Michelle Carter has been sent to jail after she encouraged her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to kill himself in 2014. The Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld her 2017 conviction for involuntary manslaughter, and her jail sentence began right away.
• El Chapo, an infamous drug lord, was found guilty on all 10 counts of drug trafficking in New York. He may face life in prison.
• Chile has opened the first school for transgender students in Latin America, aiming to prevent discrimination.

• Health experts are warning that a deadly, infectious “zombie” deer disease could spread to humans.
• NASA’s longest-lived Mars rover, “Opportunity,” has been killed by a dust storm after 14 years of roaming.
• A rare black leopard, an elusive animal, was caught on camera in Kenya.
• NASA has placed a “mole” on the surface of Mars as a part of its InSight mission. *Scientists are warning that the insect population is in fast decline, which could drastically harm our ecosystems if not slowed or reversed.
