Cheese me, please
What's a night in without a pizza? Not a very good one (unless you're not a fan of pizza and if you're not a fan... we can't be friends... that's just how it is). Pizza is love, pizza is life and pizza is a prevalent part of American pop culture. Everywhere you look there's at least some sort of veiled reference to the cheesy goodness.
Below are just a few of my favorite pizza pop culture moments. If these moments make you hungry, why not hit up GrubHub and get some pizza of your own so you can truly appreciate these moments:
1. Breaking Bad
This is arguably one of the most memorable scenes from Breaking Bad's entire run. Yes there were plenty of one-liners and other iconic scenes but the sheer ridiculousness of throwing a pizza onto a roof cemented this scene's place in pop culture history. Apparently, they'd blocked out several hours in order to get this scene right but... Bryan Cranston being the badass he is, got it on the first take.
2. Spaceballs
Mel Brooks is a comedic genius. I mean have you SEEN Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Blazing Saddles, The Producers? If the answer to that is no, then it looks like I've outlined the PERFECT movie marathon. That being said, his spoof of Star Wars (aptly titled Spaceballs) left no stone unturned. His version of Jabba the Hut was a reference to Pizza Hut (aka Pizza the Hut... GET IT). Funnily enough, the actual costume was made with pancake batter... not cheese. It did use real pepperoni though so... basically pizza.
3. Home Alone 2
What kid hasn't dreamed of living out the plot of Home Alone 2? Alone in a fancy hotel with everyone at your beck and call (at least for a little while)?! If that doesn't sound like your idea of perfection, once again... we can't be friends. If it DOES sound ideal the Plaza Hotel even has a package where you can "Live Like Kevin." Your own personal cheese pizza is waiting.
4. Wayne's World
Doesn't matter whether you're watching a movie or your favorite show, there's bound to be SOME sort of product placement. While most of the time it's annoying if you notice it, there are a few exceptions. Taking product placements of the 80s one step further, Wayne's World is still remembered today for shamelessly calling out promotional sponsorships and audience members took notice. This led to one of my personal favorite pizza pop culture moments.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Besides being named for renaissance painters, one of the things the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are best known for is their love of pizza. It was hard to pick just ONE moment because there are SOOOOOOOO many (and so many weird pizza combinations too). Here's a compilation of some of their best (and still very weird) pizza-centric scenes.
6. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
This is one of THE BEST teen comedies ever created. Granted it's a bit dated due to coming out in 1982, Fast Times at Ridgemont High managed to tackle issues we're still talking about today. If you get ANYTHING out of this entry, it's the image of Sean Penn as a stoner-surfer ordering a pizza during the middle of class. That's right, he had a PIZZA delivered TO class. I cannot tell you how many times I've fantasized about doing this only to order the pizza to my dorm while I was still in class. Another fun fact about this film is that it was initially going to be rated X due to full frontal male nudity, however that scene ended up being cut and the film was eventually rated R.
7. Saturday Night Fever
As soon as you hear the beginning of "Staying Alive" you can't help but want to strut along as well. The opening scene of Saturday Night Fever features John Travolta in his prime. Tony Manero is HOT there is no denying that but what's hotter than John Travolta (young Travolta not current Travolta)? Two piping hot pieces of pizza stacked together to form a double decker slice. Don't believe me? Check the clip out for yourself, preferably set to Bee Gees music. If you're in the New York area, you can go to Lenny's and reenact the opening scene... or you can get 50% off pizza from Papa John's and play the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack for similar effect.
8. Friends
So no one told you life was gonna be this way.... I mean, I probably could've told you but I didn't know either so I take no blame. Where there's a Joey Tribbiani, there's a Joey Special (aka two pizzas). Much like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Friends has so many memorable pizza moments it's hard to just choose one. Then again, they did have a whole episode surrounding mistaken identity and the mixup with George Stephanopoulos's pizza. Google what he looked like in the 90s and you can probably guess as to why the girls were so thrilled with the mixup.
