Alita: Battle Angel

Alita is a movie that has some pretty high expectations to live up to, considering it’s the latest project by James Cameron, one of the most prestigious names in Hollywood. After being in development for 20 years (being delayed by a little movie named Avatar), the movie finally hit cinemas this month. Although packed with some fascinating production design, stunning visuals and an interesting take on what the world will be like in 500 years, the plot itself is muddled and cringeworthy- failing to create any emotional connection to the characters and trying to mash opposing elements together to be wholly satisfying. We follow Alita as she is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by cyber-doctor Ido, who repairs her and restores her life – though when she awakes, Alita has no recollection of who she is, or the world she’s in. As Alita navigates her new life on the streets of Iron City, Ido desperately tires to shield her from her mysterious past. It’s worth pointing out that the digital CGI work on Rosa Salazar as Alita is extraordinary and should be applauded alone. Although Alita: Battle Angel is flawed, it’s undeniably gorgeous cinematography and enjoyable final act allow it to flourish and hopefully grant the blockbuster a sequel. Img source

Glass

The final movie in M. Night Shyamalan’s trilogy is now in cinemas, following up 2016’s critically acclaimed Split and 2000’s comic-book art movie Unbreakable. Glass expands on the notion that we’re living amongst gods, and tells its tale in a very unconventional and unique way. It starts out slow, mostly taking place in the chilling mental institution all the main characters are being contained in, building the tension between them (Kevin Crumb, played by James McAvoy, Mr. Glass, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and David Dunn played by Bruce Willis). Their paths cross and culminate in carnage and plot twists that aren’t easy to see coming. The addition of Sarah Paulson as Dr Ellie Staple was fantastic, delivering a solid performance and ending up as a standout of the movie (as well as James McAvoy and his top-rate performance, of course). Escape Room

2019’s latest cheesy horror flick has arrived as Escape Room hits cinemas. The premise surrounds six strangers, who all receive the same invitation to an escape room – soon finding themselves in circumstances beyond their control, realizing this is no ordinary puzzle. The movie presents an old concept with a fun, new and aesthetically pleasing take, that for the most part is enjoyable. Albeit the writing deteriorates as the movie progresses, the thick and fast plot twists and overall amusement save Escape Room from falling into the forgetful pile. Img source
