Aquaman

DC’s latest outing is definitely the most stylish gem in their throne. Aquaman’s visuals are among the best in modern cinema, raising the bar of cinematography for blockbusters to come and crafting an astonishingly gorgeous underwater metropolis. Aquaman is ultimately the movie that will see DC’s movie universe sink or swim – and it’s riding the waves. Though it isn’t the complete package – boasting a predictable plot and unnecessary love story.

Jason Momoa gives an applaudable performance as Arthur Curry - a half-human, half-atlantian warrior who doesn’t take himself too seriously, ascending on a quest across earth to find the golden trident and become king and stop his sinister half-brother ruling turmoil over Atlantis.

Highlights include a valiant chase across a sun-draped Mediterranean rooftop, a flare-lit plunge through a shoal of tusked sea beasts, and a truly epic finale that witnessed kingdoms collide in a CGI-heavy spectacle.

Ralph Breaks the Internet

The sequel to 2012’s much-loved ‘Wreck It Ralph’ is one of my favorite movies of the year. Being a huge fan of the original since its release, I had big expectations for the second outing – and it didn’t disappoint.

Keeping the characters at the centre of the story, Ralph (John C Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) venture into the internet through the newly-installed wi-fi in a bid to save Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush from retirement by acquiring an antique machine-part from eBay. The movie manages to merge video game nostalgia with a fresh story, and the exquisitely crafted Disney Princess sequence alone would warrant repeat viewings. Taking into account it’s inventive visuals and mature undertone, I’d go as far to even say it surpasses the original.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

Upon announcement of a ‘new animated Spider-Man movie’, I’ll admit – my instant thought was, “do we really need another?” The answer is absolutely. The comic-book-style feature blew any expectations I had out the window, securing its place as one of the best Marvel movies to date. We follow Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he follows his destiny to become the new Spider-Man, but when Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) unleashes a portal to alternate realities in the centre of New York, Miles soon realizes he isn’t the only web-slinger.

One of the biggest talking and selling points of the film is its style and animation. It does take some getting used to, but there’s no denying how heavenly it’s comic-book aesthetic looks. It’s a bold departure from Disney/Pixar animation styles we’ve become accustomed to from mainstream movies, but it delivers a dynamic visual experience like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

The compelling story of the and strong character development make Miles Morales’ big screen debut one of the most memorable in a long time.
