Has Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Figured Out Her Online Audience?
Recently, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez —also known as AOC—was elected as New York’s 14th District Representative at just 29 years old. That makes AOC the youngest woman to ever be elected to Congress. This year has set a lot of expectations when it comes to women in powerful roles, as we are also seeing a record number of women in Congress in 2019. Woo!
Alongside breaking gender disparities in Congress, AOC remains accessible to the public in many ways whether it’s in her neighborhood or on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Recently, a user reached out to AOC on Instagram and asked, “How do you stay stress-free and how do you keep your skin so clear?!,” and honestly, I’ve been wondering the same thing myself.
AOC responded to the question on Instagram stating that she is stressed, “pretty much every day,” but she makes sure to focus on specific tasks during her busy days. She also said that skincare is a hobby of hers and she gave users an insight to her makeup routine which happens to remain relatively simple. She explained her process of using tinted moisturizer, B.B. cream, concealer, mascara, blush, a highlighter stick, brow gel, and lip color.
AOC added that some days she doesn’t wear any makeup and, “everyone just has to deal with it,” and girl... we definitely get that. gif source
To some, this could be surprising because AOC is a professional working woman and a political representative who gives speeches, attends important meetings, interacts with other public figures and much more. However, I find her transparency about her skincare routine the best part of her interaction with the user.
AOC has built her reputation on being able to connect with the people she represents. Her district is comprised of 70% people of color and working-class people. I think it’s easily understood that normal, working class people don’t always have time to put on a full face of makeup and be prepared to be photographed or give speeches. AOC understands that because she can connect to her audience in a relatable way from experience. gif source
After uploading her response to the user on Instagram, another used compiled AOC’s responses about skincare and her makeup routine and posted them on Twitter for additional users to see. AOC then responded to the post with a powerful comment, “Be a fierce woman who can do both.”
I applaud her for remaining true to her values as a representative and maintaining her presence on social media platforms to connect with users. Yes, AOC, we see you being a fierce woman who can definitely do both! gif source
