Summer is on its way! In fact it’s just around the corner, so now’s the time to start planning the whats, wheres, hows and whens. If you’re on a tight budget, check out these money saving items to help you cut costs, leaving you with more to spend on the good stuff.
Carry on bag
Obviously this only applies if your holiday involves taking a flight somewhere, but one of the easiest ways of saving some dollar on your summer vacay is by going carry on only. Checked baggage fees are notoriously high but most airlines allow a surprisingly generous amount of hand luggage.
Ordinarily you can take one main carry on bag per person of around 10kg. On top of this you’re allowed a personal item like a handbag or smaller backpack. Each airline has their own specific regs so be sure to check with the airline you’re flying with prior to booking.
Multi-plug adaptor
It’s all too easy to arrive abroad somewhere, go to plug in your phone charger only to realise it’s a completely different socket to what you were expecting. We’ve even been to countries that use two completely different, incompatible socket varieties, sometimes in the same room (looking at you Argentina).
Avoid having to fork out for an expensive solution by taking a universal plug adaptor with you when you head abroad. It will have you covered regardless of what you come up against and is a lifelong investment you can take wherever you go.
Filter water bottle
Buying bottled water can get extremely expensive, particularly if you’re buying it in airports or in and around large tourist attractions. Even just the standard 2-3 litres per day you should be guzzling can add up if you’re not in a location where you can safely drink the tap water.
With a filter water bottle there’s no need to ever buy bottled water again. The best ones filter out everything from bacteria to harmful viruses meaning you can fill up from virtually any source without worry.
Luggage scales
Taking the opportunity to hit the shops is one of the things that many of us enjoy the most about heading abroad on our travels. It’s all too easy to load up on cheap goodies, souvenirs, or even a completely new wardrobe when you’re on your hols. But don’t forget that you still need to meet the luggage regs on your return flight.
Purchasing extra baggage allowance at the airport comes with an exorbitant price tag. And you don’t want the embarrassment of resorting to piling extra clothes on at the check in desk. Take the guesswork out of it and pack a small set of digital luggage scales so you can check ahead of time to make sure you’re on point.
Fee free card
Something most travellers fail to factor into their budgets is the amount that their bank is going to charge them to access their own cash. Sure, in many destinations you won’t pay a jot. But often there is at least a small fee involved.
Arm yourself with an account that doesn’t charge for transactions or card payments when you’re overseas. There are lots of online bank accounts now that offer this perk, so do a bit of research and open one before you go if your bank doesn’t.
