5 self-care tips to beat the January blues

Christmas is over, Blue Monday is just around the corner and uni work is showing no signs of slowing down. Now is the perfect time to start focusing on some self-love. Yep, that’s right, you’re pretty important too you know. Sometimes we’re so busy getting on with our lives we forget to take some much needed time out to focus on ourselves. Self-care is all about taking control of your health, wellbeing and lifestyle.

1. Give yoga a try

Yoga can be a great way to escape the stresses of daily life, and you don’t have to be flexible to give it a go. It’s a great way to relax and take time off from a busy day. Yoga also has a few physical benefits: increased muscle strength and tone, weight reduction and projection from injury. You'll never know if you don't give it a try!

2. Eat a well balanced diet

Self-care can be as simple as knowing when you don’t feel well and then taking some rest, or choosing healthier options when it comes to food. Instead of the Coke you have with your vodka, why not make it a Diet Coke, or change the packet of crisps to a banana.

3. Take time out to relax

Whether you prefer to relax by chilling with friends, going for a walk, reading a book or enjoying a nice hot bath. It’s important to take the time out you need to let your body recover. Listen to your body. Are you aching? Are you feeling weak? It could well be that some long overdue rest is needed.

4. Get enough sleep

Sleep is so underrated, seriously. It makes you feel better, but it also does a lot more than that as it can benefit your heart, weight and your mind. Not to mention that it improves creativity and sharpens attention!

5. Treat yo’self

Flowers, takeaway, new clothes… go on, you deserve it! More often than not we don’t give ourselves the credit we deserve for doing something well. Overcoming a struggle with anxiety on a crowded train, smashing a group presentation, achieving a 2.1 in a challenging assignment. There’s always something worth smiling about, and we should do more to celebrate that. Everyone deserves a Five Guys every now and then, right?
