Whether it’s to unwind and recharge the batteries, experience a different culture, or paint the town red, sometimes a short break is the exactly what’s needed. If you’re itching for a weekend getaway, here’s how to make the most of it.
Pick the somewhere easy to reach
Picking the right destination is everything when it comes to planning the perfect weekend getaway. Because you’ve only got a limited amount of time, you need to choose somewhere that allows you to maximise that.

Selecting somewhere that’s not too far away is essential - time spent travelling is time wasted. So make sure your location can be reached within a few hours, regardless of whether you’re flying, taking a road trip, or jumping on a train or coach. This will give you more time to spend actually enjoying your weekend.
Get your priorities straight
Think about what you want to get out of your weekend before booking it. Are you after a relaxing vacay where you can completely unbend? Do you want a wild weekend full of partying, partying and... more partying? Or are you looking to drink in some of the local culture?
Deciding what kind of weekend you want will allow you to plan accordingly and mean you don’t go home disappointed. This is particularly important if you’re heading away with other people so you can ensure that everybody's priorities are aligned.
Make an itinerary
Planning is many people’s idea of hell, especially if you’re more the spontaneous type. But a weekend getaway is just too short a time to approach without a solid idea of what you’re gonna get up to.
While you don’t need to have a minute by minute schedule drawn up, you should aim to have at least a loose itinerary of things you want to do/see/experience. This will also allow you to be realistic about how much you can hope to accomplish in the time you have available.
Borrow some extra time
Clearly this isn’t always going to be doable, and we’re by no means advocating skipping lectures or anything irresponsible like that. But if it is at all possible to turn your two day weekend into three or four days, then do it.
This ain’t rocket science folks - more time equals more potential for fun and relaxation. And who doesn’t want a bit more of that?
Get ahead
A weekend getaway is meant to be enjoyable. But if you’ve got that nagging voice in the back of your head constantly saying you should be back at home writing that assignment or revising, you’ll struggle to have any fun.
Even in the most amazing of destinations, a weekend away can be totally ruined if your mind is elsewhere. Make sure you’re ahead with work so there are no deadlines looming over your head that will distract your attention.
Plan one really special activity
To make a weekend trip really memorable and something that you’ll look back on fondly for years to come, factor in a really special activity. Exactly what that is will depend on your personal preferences and what’s available in the destination you’re heading to.
But go for something out of the ordinary which you don’t do every weekend. Opt for something that will take you out of your comfort zone or an activity you can only do in that particular destination to make it truly unforgettable.
