It’s April and we all know what that means - it’s officially th countdown until Season 8 of Game of Thrones! We’re finally getting the resolution we’ve been waiting for since 2017. Will Jon and Daenerys still end up together even though they’re related? Will the White Walkers win? Who ends up on the Iron Throne??
While all we can do is speculate until the first episode, there are a few character reunions I’m pumped for. Some of these people haven’t seen each other for a few seasons, and others (like Jamie and Jon) went through radical character development at the end of Season 7. Here are my top picks:
If you’re not up to date, HUGE SPOILERS below.
Jon Snow / Aegon Targaryen and Samwell Tarly
Season 7 ended with us finding out that Jon Snow is actually Aegon Targaryen, meaning Daenerys is his aunt. Shudder. Sam and Bran confirmed this for us when they caught up and Sam might be the one to break the news to Jon. And if Sam’s delivering something as huge as Jon being a Targaryen without knowing what happened between him and Daenerys on the boat, you know it’s gonna be good.
Jon Snow / Aegon Targaryen and Bran Stark
If Bran’s reunion with his sisters was anything to go by, it’ll likely be a pretty casual and stilted conversation between the two brothers. The last time Jon saw Bran was when he was still unconscious from his fall in Season one. Now, Bran is an all-knowing entity who knows that Jon boinked his aunt (and will probably mention it way too casually like he did to Sansa).
Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister
In Season 4, Sansa was meant to marry Tyrion (who was one of the only people who weren’t cruel to her in King’s Landing) until he was accused of killing Joffrey and she fled the capital. Tyrion was sympathetic to the then 15-year-old-Sansa who lost all her family and was basically held prisoner in King’s landing. Now, Sansa has taken all the cruel life lessons in politics, power, and manipulation and sits in a powerful position in the North. Their reunion will definitely be interesting as they’ve both gone through a lot to end up on the same side. It’ll also be interesting to see how they handle Jon’s true lineage.
Arya Stark and Jon Snow / Aegon Targaryen
At this point, we don’t even know if Jon knows Arya is alive. They last saw each other when Jon left for the Wall in like the first episode. Jon gave Arya her sword needle and I’m hoping we get a friendly brother-sister duel so Arya can show her skills. Would Jon be proud or disturbed?
Arya Stark and Gendry
Is romance still on the table for Arya who’s become a cold-blooded killer? I mean, she killed and baked Walder Frey’s sons into pies and fed it to him, before poisoning a room of like 50 people for goodness sake. Will she still be as sentimental as she once was for Gendry who she wanted as family? Will Gendry still call Arya “my lady”? Are they going to end up together? Will Arya even want that life? SO. MANY. QUESTIONS.
Arya Stark & Sandor Clegane A.K.A The Hound
Yep, Arya’s been gone for ages so she’s got a lot of exciting reunions coming up! The Hound was the person she spent the most time with before she sailed to Braavos for her training and she left him for dead after his battle with Brienne. They had a strange relationship and Arya said she hated him but you can tell deep down they cared for each other. Let’s see some more sentimental Clegane in Season 8!
All the Stark Children
If they meet in the Winterfell crypts in front of Ned Stark’s grave, I will sob. And I’m hoping they at least acknowledge poor Rickon who died in Season 5’s Battle of The Bastards, Robb who none of them saw after Season one (besides Arya) and Catelyn who tried so hard to save her children. I want one good scene with them all before one or more of them (god forbid all of them) die.
Jamie Lannister and Bran Stark
I highly doubt Bran will care or even acknowledge that Jamie was the one who crippled him as a boy since becoming the Three-Eyed Raven. I do want Jamie to show some remorse for doing so, though as he’s come a long way from the cruel knight in golden armour.
Cersei Lannister and Sansa Stark
Sansa credits Cersei with teaching her a lot while she was held captive in King’s Landing. I’m hoping these two ladies get some screen time before the curtains close as Sansa isn’t the scared young girl she was last time Cersei saw her.
Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth
We technically saw this reunion briefly in Season 7, but that was when Jamie was still loyal to Cersei. Now that Jamie left Cersei for the good of the realm, who knows how he’ll act with Brienne who knows the real Jamie. Love? Companionship? Who knows, but it’ll probably involve Oathkeeper (the sword Jamie gave to Brienne after Jamie lost his hand) and I can’t wait!
The Hound and The Mountain
We’ve been waiting for this fight so long that I thought it’d never come. Since the Hound’s scars and fear of fire were due to the Mountain’s cruelty to him as a child, maybe he’ll finally get his revenge on his zombified brother. Obligatory #Cleganebowl2k19
Jamie Lannister & Cersei Lannister
They’ve been together for almost their whole lives but at the end of Season 7, Jamie leaves Cersei to ride North and help fight the White Walkers in an almost heartbreaking farewell (if you can forget they’re brother and sisters for a moment). This reunion is sure to be a huge one, who knows what kind of madness Cersei will descend to protect her position on the throne. Will Jamie be the one to kill her and fulfill her prophecy?
Whatever happens, I’m excited for the movie length episodes and drama that will ensue. Such a shame we only get 6 episodes but I’m sure we’ll be satisfied with the ending. We have to. Otherwise, that’s 9 years of my life I can’t get back.
