5 ways organisation improves your life, according to science

Keep it clean

Staying organised is HARD. Raise your hand if, every year, you buy a fancy new day planner in an effort to actually stay on top of sh*t, and then abandon it two weeks into the semester! 🙋

And, because we want to help you stay organised, we thought we'd share some ways in which staying organized will CHANGE. YOUR. LIFE.

1. It keeps you physically healthy

Stress, clutter, and disorganisation can send stress signals to the brain, causing it to resort to coping mechanisms like stress-eating, excessive napping, and lazy tendencies.

Keeping your environment organised, and making detailed lists of things like shopping lists, meal plans, and workout plans, can help you stay motivated and accountable. It can even help lower your risk of heart attack, according to some doctors!

2. It boosts your mental health, too

Studies have shown that people who stay organised may have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, whereas people in cluttered environments, and people with numerous ongoing projects, have higher cortisol.

3. It makes you more productive

The brain can get overwhelmed when it has too much stimuli around, and this can lead to difficulty processing information.

When your notes are kept neatly and in their proper order, your brain is able to function more efficiently and, therefore, absorb more information. When your brain functions efficiently, you're able to accomplish more. Hashtag SCIENCE.

4. It can help you sleep better

When you're surrounded by physical or mental clutter, your sleep often suffers. You can help yourself get some Zs by physically de-cluttering your space, or by taking the time to mentally organise your tasks. If you make a clear to-do list, you can rest easy knowing that everything is accounted for and under control.

5. It can help your wallet

Keeping everything from shopping lists to bills in order can help encourage healthy spending habits by making you less likely to overspend on things you don't need. Plus, you'll be less likely to be taken by surprise when your car insurance payment is automatically deducted each month! I don't want to make any promises, but it seems like you'll PROBABLY become a millionaire overnight just by staying organised. But that's just my opinion.
