Term time is underway, it’s too cold for flip flops and the student loan is looking a little under the weather. Don’t despair though, October has all the potential to be the best month yet. From a secret Moroccan hideaway through to swatting zombies, here at DesignMyNight we're nightlife pros and we know how to shake the impending winter blues this October.
1. Beauty and the Feast - London
Immersive event studio Darling & Edge are all about the unbelievable and the beautiful, from neon, underground chambers to commemorate Day of the Dead through to a secret East London spaceship. For their October offering, the duo are taking on the Beauty and the Beast to create a feast down in Vaults beneath Waterloo Station. Don’t expect Disney though, this event is far more beastly, with three courses, table dancing and a fairy godmother leading proceedings. Find your French ruffles or best ball gown and get ready to unleash your inner animal.
2. Halloween - London/UK
Epic parties and an excuse to dress up - don’t even try and tell us that you don’t love Halloween. Whether you’re a complete wimp or love the lashings of fake blood, cities up and down the country will be inviting in ghosts and ghouls with a hot roster of club nights and events. In London alone, you could see in the witching hour on a boat party, raise the dead at a group sing-along, or brunch with a hip-hop twist. If you’re down with being absolutely terrified, keep an eye out for immersive events such as Zombie S.W.A.T, which throws you in an underground bunker with the living dead for three hours of battles.
3. Alcotraz - London
‘Mum, Dad - I’m in Prison’, might just be the worst call you have to make, but don’t worry, Alcotraz is a fun kind of jail. Inspired by America’s infamous Alcatraz Prison, this pop-up is bringing cocktails to ‘criminals’. Don an orange jump suit, smuggle in a bottle of your favourite spirit, and hang out in cells smaller than your dorm room. Fortunately, your cellmate just so happens to be a mean mixologist and will use his selection of syrups and garnishes to create original tipples; just watch out for the warden.
4. Tequila & Mezcal Fest 2017 - London
After all those nights in the SU you might consider yourself quite the tequila connoisseur, but trust us, there’s more to it than salt, lime and tiny sombreros. To show us just how great the spirit is, Tequila & Mezcal Fest is returning for the fourth time to London. Taking place in the Boiler House on Brick Lane, the event will be brimming with Mexico’s finest tequila and mezcal along with street food from local bigwigs, and cultural events such as Aztec ceremonies and exotic dancing.
5. Heist Bank Beer Festival - London
Moments from the Paddington basement, Heist Bank has student-friendly written all over it with doughy pizzas, a pool table and laid-back vibes. It’s getting even more appealing this October as they host a beer festival, slap-bang in the middle of the month. Taking place over two days, there will be four headliners, including Beavertown Brewery, Fourpure Brewing Co. and Wild Beer Co., as well as pizza and access to beer masterclasses.
6. Moroccan Medina Pop-Up at Queen of Hoxton - London
There’s no point in dragging it out any longer, summer is well and truly over. While October may be in full swing, there’s one East London spot that’s hotting up. The Queen of Hoxton is bringing a flavour of Morocco to its rooftop this winter. Step into the wigwam to find a wonderland of patterned cushions, cacti and snuggly throws, while outside the space will be inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s famous garden. Food and drinks are similarly themed, with hot buttered rum, halloumi fries and vegan mezze sharing boards.
7. Brum’s Big Fat Burger Festival - Birmingham
Taste and Liquor are one Birmingham event company that are making dreams into a reality. Organising regular food festivals, they’ve brought Brum a pizza-filled day as well as a kebab feast, and now it’s the humble burger’s turn. Brum’s Big Fat Burger Festival will be stuffed to the rafters with street food vendors selling cheesy, beefy and veggie wares. It’s not all about buns though; the event will also include live music, DJs and dessert stalls to finish everything off.
8. Disco Yoga’s Brighton Brunch - Brighton
No, you’re not reading that incorrectly, this event really is a combination of disco and yoga. Taking place at Brighton Harbour Hotel, the session combines belting tunes with yoga moves; think downward dog to Gloria Gaynor and sun salutations with Lionel Richie in between. Is any disco complete without glitter? We didn’t think so either; arrive to the class 15 minutes early and the pros will ‘glitter you up’. Stick around after for a delicious three-course brunch and a refreshing cocktail to reward you for all your hard work.
9. The Glitter and Grind Revue - Glasgow
As one of Glasgow’s biggest and best gay clubs, The Polo Lounge is a hot ticket any night of the week. This October the Scottish spot is upping the ante as the annual Glitter & Grind Revue swings back into town. Expect another night of raucous behaviour and scintillating performances as eight acts bring their all to the stage. Rubyyy Jones will be enticing with her brand of body positive queerlesque, Freida Nipples is revealing all, and Ella Mackay is doing strange things with puppets.
10. Harry Potter Quiz - Birmingham
It might be 20 years since the first book was released but Harry Potter fever shows no sign of abating. The Old Crown in Digbeth is testing our book knowledge with a fun quiz on all things Harry and co. Think you know your Hufflepuffs from your Ravenclaws? Your herbology from defence against the dark arts? Head down to this atmospheric old pub to show that you’re more magician than muggle.
