Christmas is one of our favourite times of year here at UNiDAYS HQ, bottomless mulled drinks and ice skating is such an exciting part of the Christmas experience, but what really gives us those festive feelings are Christmas markets! And nobody does Christmas markets better than our beautiful continent. Check out our top 5 favourites you should visit this year.
1. Vienna
Vienna is famous for its epic Christmas Markets and festive spirit all round. From residents decorating the outside of their homes in festive colours and lights to the multiple markets that pop up across the city. However, the biggest and most famous market in Vienna is the Magic of Advent which turns the City Hall Square into a magical wonderland of festive foods, drinks and Christmas decorations. For the ultimate festive experience, Vienna is the place to be.
2. Brussels
From the 25th November, Winter Wonders’ in Brussels opens for the festive season. Take a trip to enjoy a range of festive activities from ice skating and fairground rides to festive food and drinks. The Christmas market experience in Brussels is both magical and fun for friends and family.
3. Aachen
The Aachen Christmas Market is famous for it’s friendly and familiar atmosphere in the Aachen region. From 18th November, the squares and streets surrounding the Town Hall turn into a magical winter wonderland of lights and festivities, housing hundreds of market stands, it is the perfect meeting place for friends and family during the holidays.
4. Zagreb
The Zagreb Christmas Market was awarded Best Christmas Market of 2016. A popular event for tourists and residents, the Christmas market is in its 6th year and still growing. Come and take part in a multitude of events from singing and dancing to tasting local delicacies in the streets surrounding Jelacic Square and get into the festive feeling with Croatian traditions.
5. Birmingham
Birmingham is home to the largest authentic German market in Europe outside of Germany. From the end of November, Victoria Square and New street houses over 180 stalls full of festive foods, decorations and gift ideas. For an evening of fun festivities, head down to the German market for fairground rides, ice skating and a nice warm glass of mulled wine.
