The Big Travel Checklist

Heading off on a gap year adventure, or just going on a short getaway with your friends? You definitely don't want to be forgetting the essentials, so take this as your travel checklist reminder and enjoy your adventure!

1. Money

It may seem silly to remind you to take money with you on your travels, but when you're trying to remember all the important bits to pick up for your travels, it's good to have a reminder.  I find it's always best to take more than you think you need, incase you get into any sticky situations, or see a really nice pair of shoes that you simply have to buy! Having a little extra doesn't hurt.

2. Passport

Be sure to sort out your passport long before you intend on travelling, otherwise you'll be spending a lot of time waiting at the border. This is especially the case if you do not have a passport, as it can take up to three weeks to acquire a new passport. It is also a good idea to photocopy your legal documents and store them separately to your legal documents, just in case you misplace them or they get stolen.

3. Insurance

Safety first! Get yourself sorted with some travel insurance, to be there for you in times of need! You can currently save 10% on your travel insurance if you purchase through CANSTAR award-winning Insureandgo when you use your UNiDAYS® discount, and cover starts from just $25.  So really there's no excuse to travel without cover.

4. Music

It doesn't matter how far you intend on travelling, making up some travel playlists is a must!

5. Let your bank know you’re heading off

Before departure, it is a good idea to notify your bank. Banks often track the usage of your cards to detect fraudulent behaviour, and as a consequence, they can block your card. To prevent this, simply let your bank know of your plans, so your card usage is not interrupted.

6. Padlocks

If you're staying in hostels during your travels, be sure to keep your luggage and any important documents locked away.  You wouldn't want someone walking off with your passport after all would you?

7. Ticket

The one item (apart from your passport) that you'll probably check for a thousand times from leaving your home, to getting to the airport.  It is always a good idea to have your airline and accommodation itinerary emailed and or messaged to you, so you have a digital record.

8. Medication

If you're on any form of medication, don't forget to add it to your suitcase.  The same goes for packing a travel first aid kit, if you think you might need it, take it.  If you are going to a destination with different time zones, it is wise to set your alarm to ensure the timing of taking your medication does not change.
