Register to vote in the general election & have your say

The “genny lec” is less than a month away! Don’t miss your chance to have your say in who should be in charge for the next five years.

If you haven’t already, register to vote today. It literally takes 5 minutes, and if you need any more convincing, here are 5 things that take longer than registering to vote!

⚠️ The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming general election is 11.59pm on Tuesday 18th June ⚠️

Am I eligible to vote?

You’re eligible to vote in the election if:

• You’re 18 or over
• You’re a British citizen, a Republic of Ireland citizen with a UK address or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen.

When is the next general election?

The next general election is on Thursday 4th July 2024.

What happens if I’m not at my uni address by then?

Don’t worry! You can register to vote at your home and term-time address, but you can only vote at one of them - it’s actually a criminal offence to vote more than once.

If you can’t make it on the day, you have two options:

• Apply for a proxy vote (where someone votes for you), the deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday 26th June
• Apply for a postal vote, the deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday 19th June.

Since 2023, everyone has to show a valid form of ID to vote! You can use a passport, driving licence or other form of ID. You can even use an out-of-date photo ID, as long as it still looks like you!

If you need a different option, apply for a free ‘Voter Authority Certificate’ before 5pm on Wednesday 26th June 2024.
