Think the beauty industry is all influencers and celebrities? Think again! We recently chatted with our very own Vicky Fox, the Customer Success Lead for Beauty & Lifestyle at UNiDAYS. And she had some 10/10 insights into working in the beauty world…
VICKY FOX
CUSTOMER SUCCESS LEAD
What did you study at university, and where?
I studied English Literature and Spanish at Nottingham Trent University, and then did a PGCE at the University of Nottingham.
What was your first role out of uni?
In my third year, I was given the opportunity to travel abroad. I went to Gran Canaria for 9 months where I worked with the British Council and was essentially an English Language Assistant for Spanish schools, supporting native Spanish learners to improve their English. I absolutely loved it. I just love helping people. I enjoy being in supporting roles where I can really nurture someone's progress. So, that’s why I chose to pursue a career in teaching after finishing my degree—I went back to Gran Canaria to become a full-time English teacher.
HOW DID YOU GO FROM TEACHING TO UNiDAYS?
There were parts of my teaching role I absolutely loved, but ultimately there was just something in the back of my mind that said this wasn’t the right choice for me.
“No matter what you study, if there's something that you're passionate about and that you enjoy, there's always a way to get there.”
I returned to Nottingham and wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with myself. I saw a job come up at UNiDAYS as an Account Coordinator and I thought, I've got nothing to lose. Since then I haven’t looked back. And that was almost 6 years ago now.
Tell us a little about your current role—the good, the bad, and the ugly!
In my current role, I’m a Customer Success Lead for Beauty & Lifestyle. I manage a very dedicated team, running training sessions and ensuring that everybody has the tools and resources they need.As a team, our goal is to enrich the experience of our beauty partners, making sure they’re positioned in the best way possible. Ultimately, this ensures our members have the best experience when they come onto the app as well.
“I’ve presented to some of the biggest beauty names in the world, and delivered insights and data to them in such an incredible way.”
I’ve had a lot of highlights over the years, but soon after I joined the beauty team, we were involved in a campaign with LOOKFANTASTIC—which won at the Performance Marketing Awards!I also really enjoy being able to optimise for our beauty partners. Last year, for Black Friday, we drove a million organic impressions—purely from additional posts and content that we offered a partner. I just love seeing our efforts move the needle in terms of brand performance.
“Within the beauty world, things can change by the hour.”
In terms of challenges, it’s just so fast-paced. It always keeps you on your toes... It's like you never get to the bottom of that to-do list because it’s always expanding. But at the same time, it's so varied that you never get bored or feel that you’re doing the same thing day-in and day-out.
What is it about the beauty industry that you love?
For me, beauty is a form of creative expression. I think it's an opportunity to try out new looks, to be adventurous, and I’ve always loved the ‘newness’ of it—like the emerging brands and trends.I also think beauty has a profound impact on society. Plus, perceptions of beauty are changing so substantially. It’s becoming much more of an accountable industry in terms of inclusivity and I just absolutely love being a part of how this unfolds.
What advice would you give someone starting out in the beauty industry?
The one piece of advice I would like to give is that regardless of whether your background has been directly related to beauty, there’s always an opportunity to move into that field. If it's something that you're passionate about, take value from any sort of transferable skill or area you can apply to a new role, and the rest will fall into place. Simply put, never be afraid to jump into the unknown!Sounds like a bit of you? Discover the perf role with a career at UNiDAYS!
