The roots of Pride Month that you might not know about

Take a stand and win $500!

June is officially Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ rights and members in our communities. This year, Pride Month has collided with the worldwide movement of Black Lives Matter, which has inspired the recognition of how LGBTQ+ rights movements were initially led by people of color.

Many people do not know that trans women of color were at the forefront of protests in 1969 (we see you, Marsha P. Johnson and Zazu Nova). It all started at the Stonewall Inn, a meeting place for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers. On June 28th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn and demanded to do sex verification checks on trans women. This incident broke out into protests and riots against police violence and unjust laws. These important conversations continue today and are making a great impact on society. Pride Month itself owes its very existence to these trans women of color who used their voices to start the conversation about LGBTQ+ issues in America.
