September is such a funny month, isn’t it? I always expect it to be freezing as soon as September 1st hits and autumn is on it’s way but a lot of the time it’s still quite sunny! Autumn officially starts on the 22nd September and as we move into October temperatures drop and it’s time to think about cosy knits, thicker fabrics and tonal colours.
Transitioning into autumn doesn’t have to mean jumping straight into jumpers and jeans just yet, though. Here are five pieces that you can add to your style stash to make sure you’re not chilly but also not sweating when it’s still 16 degrees outside...
1. The denim pinafore
Depending on the weather a denim pinafore can be rocked bare legged or with tights during this transitional time - they’re so versatile! I love this dark dungaree dress from Oasis (which you can grab a beaut 10% off off by the way with your UNiDAYS account!) This dress is perfect with a striped tee, bare legs and Converse whilst the weather is still good and then it can work just as well with a thin jumper underneath, tights and boots - all ready to crunch through those autumn leaves!
Moving into winter, simply add thicker tights, a cute teddy-fluff coat on top with your favourite hat and scarf and you’ve nailed that transitional wardrobe. Three outfits for three different seasons. It’s also super cute for when spring and summer rolls around with slogan tees and chunky sandals. I mean, just buy it already!
2. Chunky cardigans
A cardigan is great if you want to throw something on to keep you a little bit warmer but don’t want to commit to a full jumper situation because that can get toasty very quickly. And, there’s nothing worse than overheating when it’s still warm-ish outside. I love how Samia has paired this Pull & Bear cardigan with a midi dress and sandals over on Instagram, the colours are gorgeous together and you can simply take off the cardigan if the sunshine comes out to play!
3. Jumpsuits
Jumpsuits have to be one of my favourite things to wear because they’re so easy peasy to chuck on and go! I feel 100% cooler in a jumpsuit than I do in a dress for some reason so they’re always my go-to for fancy occasions. New Look have some amazing items in at the moment like this rust coloured spot print number which is already under £30, even before your student discount.
This versatile piece is perfect to wear with a denim jacket over the top whilst it’s still warm enough to and then would look really great with black boots and a black roll neck top underneath for when times get chilly! Simply throw your favourite coat on top, add a sassy beret and you’ll be all, ‘winter, come at me!’.
4. Trousers
Transitioning from flowy culottes and pretty shorts back into jeans can be a shock to the system when you’ve spent all summer feelin’ free! A pair of trousers can be the perfect transitional piece to make sure you don’t get goosebumps but they also mean that you don’t have to wear thick denim or skinny jeans just yet if you don’t want to.
These khaki cargo trousers from Forever 21 are great for this as they’re a light fabric but could always be layered up with thermals underneath to take them into the deepest, darkest winter months too! Rock with a biker jacket, plain white tee and black Converse or Vans Old Skool for an easy day to day look or switch it up with a black body and black barely there heels for an evening look.
5. Biker jackets
How gorgeous is this red suedette biker jacket from Dorothy Perkins? Super soft suedette fabric, an amazing autumnal colour and perfect for jazzing up day to day uni outfits. This isn’t a winter coat, this much is clear - you won’t get much protection from the elements in this beauty! But, it sure is fab for wearing over a thin knit with your favourite jeans and a scarf for those October days with a little bit of chill.
What do you think? Will you be rocking the coloured jacket trend this autumn?
