Couture is fashion at its most extravagant. The designs are bold, the fabrics are luxurious, and the craftsmanship behind the scenes is thorough. Though there may not necessarily be any commercial value aside from stars on the red carpet, there’s still a need to create such flamboyant fashion. Why? Because it’s an aspect of the fashion industry that needs to be preserved. Sure, there are plenty of designs that are more wearable, not to mention more affordable. But none can come close to sheer glamour that comes with couture wear.

Athleisure and gym apparel may be dominating the catwalk at the moment, but there’s still a niche market ready to receive the latest couture fashion offerings. The USA and Great Britain are still queuing up to be seen in couture gowns, bridal dresses in particular. It’s reported that Japan is also a growing market, as well as the elite young women in Dubai. One single gown can take between 200 and 500 hours to make, so those who can afford it are happy to pay a high price for the quality.

Who are the leaders in couture fashion?

The likes of Chanel, Elie Saab, Christian Dior, Armani and Valentino are among the leaders still creating couture fashion. If these world-renowned designers weren’t so involved in keeping the couture part of the fashion industry alive, it’s incredibly conceivable that it could die out altogether. The same embroidery from the 17th century was recently used in a design for a spring/summer 2017 collection. This goes to show the influence that traditional couture fashion has on the industry even today.

The future of couture

Given that the industry is still booming, particularly as it reaches new markets, there’s no reason why couture should become irrelevant any time soon. Couture is very much alive and kicking, a physical embodiment of all the hard work that goes into creating gorgeous garments in the fashion industry. So, the next time you find yourself questioning the quirky designs making their way down the runway in Paris Fashion Week, think again about just how poignant these pieces are for the industry.
