Let’s address the elephant in the room right away, Mexico has got a less than stellar reputation. Most of what we see portrayed in the media focuses on drugs, violence and organised crime, and these are obviously aspects of Mexico that exist. But you barely have to scratch below the surface to realise this country is so much more than the one-dimensional news reports would have us believe. Here are 5 reasons why travelling in Mexico is freaking awesome.
1. The country is beautiful and diverse
The most popular tourist destination in Mexico is undoubtedly Cancun, but this tequila-soaked, Spring Break mecca is by no means a reflection of the rest of the country. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back beach town, a modern metropolis, or a lush jungle retreat, Mexico has something incredible to offer you. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll enjoy swimming in the freshwater cenotes that pepper the Yucatan Peninsula. For beach babes, there are two stunning coasts to explore, and urbanites can take their pick of big, action-packed cities.
2. Mexican food is outta this world
Forget everything you think you know about Mexican food right now. Tasty as it may be, that TexMex you’ve been scoffing at Taco Bell just ain’t it. Proper Mexican food is on a-whole-nother planet. Each region has its own specialities to try, from tacos stuffed with slow cooked pork and sublime seafood that’s freshly caught to magical mole sauces infused with dark chocolate. Spicy, fragrant, and unbelievably delicious, it’s impossible not to fall head over heels in love with Mexican food.
3. The history is fascinating
Often brutal, at times devastatingly sad, but also frequently inspirational, the history of this country is nothing short of fascinating. From the picture postcard colonial towns demonstrating the influence of the Spanish conquest, to the mind-blowing Mayan and Aztec ruins dating back almost 3,000 years, Mexico wears its history on its sleeve. Because it’s clearly on display wherever you go, you don’t have to be a history buff to start to appreciate just how rich the past is.
4. The traditional arts and crafts on offer are stunning
The traditional marketplaces that you find in most towns and cities the length and breadth of Mexico are simply spectacular. And they’re full to the brim with handcrafted, skilfully made artisanal products of all description. Gorgeous leather bags and shoes, brightly coloured hand-woven fabrics, traditional clothing, and intricately decorated ornaments will have you wishing you’d brought another suitcase to transport your haul back home in.
5. It’s affordable
Mexico is renowned for being one of the most affordable Latin American countries to travel in. Even in the bigger cities where you might expect things to get a bit expensive, it’s relatively easy to live extremely well on very little. There are plenty of inexpensive restaurants as well as an abundance of street stalls and markets where you can get top-notch food for rock-bottom prices. Quality accommodation is easy to find for even the smallest of budgets, and a night out can set you back less than what you’re used to paying for a bottle of wine.
