My Childhood: Growing Up In 'Straya

Your childhood is possibly one of the best times of your life, going on family holidays, making new experiences and generally being innocent.  Here are eight memories from my childhood that some of you might be able to relate to.

1. When Your Parents Decide It'd Be Fun To Explore More Of Australia, And Of All The Places We Could Go To, They Choose To 4WD Through The Hot, Dusty And Barren Desert.

Being the true Aussie kids my sister and I were, we’d sit in the back seat demanding more cheese twisties with the other packets serving as hats on our heads. You could say they weren’t very sun smart, especially for being out in the open desert, but no one seemed to care too much in those days.

2. Staying At Your Grandparents Farm When Their Cows, In A Herd Of About Fifty, Escapes From Their Paddock Making A Run For It Out Onto The Road.

At only eight years old you were woken up and asked to help round these big, scary beasts back into the paddock. You could say it was both a traumatizing and exhilarating night.

3. Going Golf Buggy Joy-Riding on your grandparents farm

Me and my friend decided to drive my grandparents golf buggy, being way below the legal age limit, and ultimately not having any experience and therefore capabilities of driving such a vehicle, so, you guessed it, we crashed and could you believe what we did? We blamed it on the dog.

4. When You’d Make Your Regular Trip To The Post Office And Plead Your Mum Or Dad To Buy You Another Pack Of AFL Footy Cards.

Just so you could impress the boys and play trade with them. You also secretly loved the cards and got extremely excited when you got the silver card or a player from your team.

5. The Dreaded Public School House Swimming Sports Where Too Many Youngsters Would Frantically Race To The End Of The Pool And Back.

You could say there were some near death experiences, lots of tears and quite a few patches of warm water in the pool (TMI?).

6. Your First Dates With Your Primary School "Boyfriend"

I'd go on horse rides with my primary school “boyfriend” and double dink on the same horse, you’d never felt the feeling of being so uncomfortable and so exhilarated at the same time from being so close to boy cooties.

7. The Surfing Holidays Where You’d Go Out Surfing Everyday.

Except I wouldn’t be the one to call it “surfing”, I’d call my technique- nose diving, sliding off the front, then being churned like I was in a washing machine, to then finally come up above the water, gasping for air after basically swallowing half the ocean to then have to face another wave fast approaching you. God knows how I got my surfboard back each time.

8. And Lastly, The Good Ol’ Family Barbies On Those Stinking Hot Summer Nights

Where you’d basically get eaten alive by mosquitos, stuffed full with barbequed meat, and would end up with a total food baby, and at this time your parents thought it’d be a great idea to take a photo, so basically all of your childhood photographs depict an obese looking, grumpy, tired, and overheated child.
