About to start your first O Week? Read on for tips on how to nail that first week, and make the most of your time at uni!
1. Get uncomfortable
While you might be tempted to lock yourself in your room, avoiding any kind of human interaction - DON’T. Yeah, you might have an awkward conversation with a stranger, but you might also have two great conversations with people that will end up as your new BFF’s. O Week is prime time to step outside of your comfort zone. Remember that everyone is in the same boat! If you’re feeling nervous, the person next to you is probably just as nervous. No one is making friends from bed - just sayin’.
2. Pace yo'self.
We don’t want to sound like your mum here, but when it comes to drinking, pace yourself! There’s nothing pretty about chucking up your guts in front of a bunch of people you've just met.
3. Say hey. To EVERYONE and ANYONE.
It's tempting to walk into a lecture theatre and find a seat to the side where you can melt into the wall and avoid talking to anyone. Grab student life by the balls, and sit next to a complete stranger. Introducing yourself to them could seriously pay off down the track - I’ve randomly introduced myself to strangers in lectures, only to find out they are complete geniuses, who will give you all the answers for CHEM101.
4. Get your shit sorted.
If you’re moving out of home, make sure you have everything sorted before classes start! This includes everything from making sure you have internet, to getting your student transport card. You don't need to juggling one-hundred life-admin tasks wgen you should be out there having fun!
5. Don’t buy the prescribed textbooks before you start classes!
Textbooks are expensive AF. Don’t go spending all of your cash on textbooks that you might not even need, or will only use once. Lecturers and tutors will usually let you know if the first week of classes whether or not you will need to buy a particular textbook. Many universities have a Facebook page where students can buy and sell second hand items like textbooks books. Picking up an older edition of a textbook will save you a lot of money.
If you do end up having to buy textbooks, make sure you check out Booktopia, where you can use your exclusive UNiDAYS discount.
