FOMO • A form of social anxiety - a compulsive concern that one might miss an opportunity or satisfying event, often aroused by posts seen on social media websites. source
None of us want to miss out on fun things that our friends are doing. Going on trips, going to brunch, going to a party. But we do, and it sucks. We can’t always be there for every single event in our lives and it doesn’t help that we see it documented in every single form of social media. There are people going on trips all over, posting it on their instagram stories AND snapchat stories; you can’t get away. Is this holding us back from enjoying the things we have now? Are we taking what we have for granted?
When we have “FOMO” (fear of missing out) or at least when I do, it’s usually because I’m doing something that I have to be doing. For example, working. I’m frustrated that I have to work therefore missing a super fun bachelorette party at a really hip brewery. The truth is, I should be grateful that I have a job. Sure I’m missing a party, but there will be 100 more bachelorette parties. We’re constantly being fed that people are out there doing better things than us and it does suck! With social media being as addicting as it is, it’s so hard to not be invested in what others are doing but we have to look at the bigger picture. Just because someone is doing something more interesting or more fun than you, doesn’t mean that you’re not doing something interesting too. Let’s be real, you’re probably not missing out on much anyway. Yeah it looks fun, but they probably spent half an hour trying to take that “perfect” picture.
As hard as it is, try not to let it bother you too much. Especially in the summer when people are taking a bunch of trips and sitting out on the beach. You have a good reason to be missing out on it, and your time will come and someone else will be looking through your instagram pictures wishing they were you.
