5 ways to combat loneliness

Let’s be honest—being a student can get lonely sometimes. You’re trying to balance studying, a social life, and everything else in between and it can get ✨overwhelming✨. Even people with plenty of mates will still have moments of loneliness—you’re not alone!

If you’re feeling lonely, here are five things that might help…

So, what can you do to try and combat loneliness?

1. Find a distraction or hobby

Find something that helps you feel better about yourself and keeps you busy. It could be a hobby that you enjoy. Uni is all about trying new things, so discover what you may be good at and what you should never try again! Sometimes, making an effort to leave your accom can make a huge difference to how you’re feeling. Grab a coffee with a housemate, hit the gym or ask a coursemate if they’re down for a study sesh.

2. It's alright to enjoy our own company

Take time for yourself, you're allowed to enjoy your own company without feeling ‘lonely’. We need to be able to enjoy being with ourselves. Because how are you supposed to let others be around you if you cannot even deal with being with yourself.

3. Don’t bottle up your feelings

Sometimes we just need a friend to talk to. Not every convo needs to be a heart-to-heart, but those mini chats can lead to a much-needed talk that makes you feel that little bit less alone. Never bottle up your emotions or push yourself away from people. That’s what friends are for, to make you feel better. Most uni’s have people you can talk to. They offer counselling to those that might not have people they can turn to. Everyone deserves to have someone to talk to.

4. Get involved with campus activities and societies

It might sound a bit cringe, but trust us—campus societies and activities can be underrated! They’re run by fellow students and you’re likely to find people you vibe with. If you’re not feeling what’s on offer, why don’t you consider starting your own? It’s a great way to meet new people who share similar interests.

5. Find your people online

If you’re not finding your people IRL, then why not try online? With social media and apps like Bumble BFF, it widens your search for new pals! Hop onto uni specific FB groups and follow the social media pages for your uni to stay in the loop of meet ups.
