10 job hunting tips you need to know
It’s the thing most students dread… the job hunt. Yeah, we know—it’s longggg. But don’t stress! We’ve pulled together CV, LinkedIn, and interview tips so you can go from clueless to employed legend in no time.
1. Keep it profesh
Your LinkedIn profile isn’t the place for your holiday snaps or that blurry pic from last year’s bottomless brunch. Keep it sleek, clear, and—most importantly—professional.
2. Be clear, relevant and real
Your LinkedIn bio is your digital first impression, so make it count. Include:
✔️ What you study/studied at uni
✔️ Your best grades—if they slap, flex them!
✔️ What you’re looking for (internship, grad scheme, trainee role, or straight into work?)
Also, sprinkle in a bit of personality—hobbies, volunteer work, and strengths. Employers want to know you’re a well-rounded human.
When it comes to past jobs, less is more. You don’t need to list every single retail shift from the past three years. Stick to the most recent and relevant roles, and if you did a placement year, hype it up—highlight your responsibilities and anything cool you achieved.
3. Get social
LinkedIn isn’t just for stalking CEOs and seeing which of your mates are pretending to be “passionate about digital marketing.” Join industry groups, engage with posts, and connect with people in your field. The more active you are, the better LinkedIn’s job recommendations will be!
4. Keep your dates straight
Your CV and LinkedIn need to match exactly—no dodgy employment gaps or made-up start dates. Recruiters will clock it, and it’s not a vibe.
5. No buzzwords
Nobody cares if you’re a “hard-working, dynamic individual” unless you have proof. Instead of throwing in cliché phrases, give actual examples of times you’ve shown initiative, smashed deadlines, or handled a tricky situation. Show, don’t tell.
6. Spell check
A single typo can send your CV straight to the bin. Read it, reread it, and then get someone else to proofread it for you. Attention to detail matters. Hellooo Grammarly!
7. Flex your achievements
Under each job role on your CV, add an achievements section. Why?
1. It makes you stand out
2. It gives you solid answers for interview questions
3. If your mind goes blank mid-interview, you’ve got built-in reminders of how great you are
8. Dress to impress
Figuring out what to wear to an interview? Stalk the company’s socials. If it’s corporate (law, banking), a suit is your go-to. If it’s more casual (tech, startups), think smart jeans, a shirt, and decent shoes. When in doubt, overdress slightly—no one’s getting rejected for looking too polished.
9. Take your time
In interviews, don’t panic-answer. Take a sec to think before you speak, and always bring your answers back to real-life experience—whether that’s from uni, a part-time job, or even your Sunday League team. If you can prove you’ve got the skills, you’re already winning.
10. Don’t talk money…yet
Talking money in your first interview? Instant red flag for recruiters. Hold off until you’ve got an offer—then you can start negotiating.
