The summer has come to a close, and honestly I couldn’t wait any longer. There are plenty of reasons for that including my hatred of humidity, I have no business in shorts, and like, fall is just a better season (fight me). But also, some great movies come out between now and December, some of which will matter come awards season and some will just be a nice distraction from everything else. The following selection are what I’m most excited for this fall.

1. Mother!

Everything you’ve heard about this movie is true. And yet, see it anyway. It’s bonkers in the way that so few movies try to be nowadays, we’ll be talking about it and complaining about it for years to come, it’s not going to win any Oscars but I guarantee you it’ll win a few Razzies. See it anyway, because it’s one of the better Biblical movies ever made, and knowing that it’s a metaphor for biblical creation completely changes the experience. In Theaters Now.

2. Battle of The Sexes

The 1973 tennis match this movie is based on is one of the most notorious moments in US Sports history. 90 million people watched Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) face each other in a huge $100,000 contest. Early reviews for this one haven’t been stellar, but everyone agrees this could nab Emma Stone her second consecutive Oscar nomination.* In Theaters Now.*

3. Literally, Right Before Aaron

It’s been a long while since we’ve had a good rom-com of this pedigree. Reese Witherspoon tried and failed this year (go watch Big Little Lies instead of that movie) and besides her, I haven’t seen many that interested me. Then came this gem, starring almost every comedic actor working right now. Justin Long plays a heartbroken man who gets invited to his ex-girlfriend’s wedding (Cobie Smulders, finally out of the Marvel movie machine) and then tries to win her back. In Theaters Now.

4. The Snowman

The first snow is always the best part of the fall. Not so much in this swedish city, where a serial killer waits until the first snow to start terrorizing people. He’s being hunted by Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) and a fellow cop played by Rebecca Ferguson. Based on a bestselling series of novels by Jo Nesbø, this looks like it could be a fun addition to the Halloween horror movie lineup. In Theaters October 20th.

5. Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig is one of our generation’s most underrated multi-hyphenates. She regularly gives award-worthy performances in movies many people don’t get the chance to see, but she’s also a great writer and director. Lady Bird is her second movie, a semi-autobiographical about a year in the life of a young women living in Northern California. Saoirse Ronan, another one of our generations best actresses, stars alongside an incredible ensemble of broadway actors. All of that adds up to a movie we’ll probably be talking about until next year during awards season. In Theaters November 3rd.

6. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

If there was ever a character actor or actress that deserved our devoted love and support it would be Frances McDormand. She shows up in almost every movie you’ve ever seen, but since Fargo she hasn’t gotten any material she deserves, until now. This dark comedy about a mother who takes the police department and her entire town to task for the rape and murder of her daughter, received a rare 10 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival earlier in the summer. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Woody Harrelson (Hunger Games) also star, developments that practically made me froth at the mouth from excitement. In Theaters November 10th.

7. The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Nicole Kidmanaissance rolls along, full steam ahead. After an incredible year for Nicole (Emmy win for Big Little Lies, Oscar Nomination for Lion), she’s going to get another shot at the Oscar with this horror-thriller by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. Colin Farrell also stars as a surgeon who befriends the son of a patient who died on the table and wants revenge. Early reviews out of the festival circuit give the impression we should be talking about this one for a while. In Theaters November 17th.

8. Molly’s Game

Jessica Chastain can do no wrong, in my opinion. If I pretend that The Huntsman: Winter’s War doesn’t exist, she has a pretty stellar track record of elevating everything she’s in. Here she stars as the eponymous Molly, a former Olympic skier and mastermind of a super high-stakes underground Poker ring with ties to the Russian mob. She’s being indicted by the FBI, and she’s hired Idris Elba to be her lawyer. This marks writer Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, an important occasion in film that I’m personally very excited for. In Theaters November 22nd.

9. Call Me By Your Name

LGBT-friendly movies are becoming more and more common, and while it feels like Moonlight was the catalyst, this movie was already in production during Moonlight’s rise last winter. This movie is about a young boy (Timothee Chalamet) who has an affair with an older man (Armie Hammer) living with his family in Italy over the summer. Director Luca Guadagnino is known for this certain type of movie i’d call “Rich People Behaving Badly in Italy” but this one looks a bit more nuanced than his previous. I’m into it, and the prime Awards season release date gives me hope for it’s chances. In theaters November 24th.

10. The Disaster Artist

Think of the worst movie you’ve ever seen. Are you thinking about Tommy Wiseau’s The Room? If not, try again. The Room is a cringe-fest the likes of which only comes along once or twice in a lifetime. It’s next to impossible to sit through, yet the cult-like love of this terrible movie is epic. James Franco is directing and starring as Tommy, with a script based directly off of a memoir written by Greg Sestero, one of the actors in the original movie. In Theaters December 8th.
