6 tips for choosing your student accommodation

So it’s that time of year when you’ve gotta start thinking about your accommodation for next year! It can be super tricky to make sure you’re making the right choice for YOU, so use these tips to help you along 🫶

1. Pick your housemates wisely

Choosing someone you don’t know very well can be a massive risk. What’s your vibe? Try and find people who share similar interests and where possible, live with your mates! Housemate harmony is KEY, so defo read up on our tips for making your life as smooth as poss.

2. Think about your budget

Dreaming of a penthouse apartment with the gorge views? Course you are. But remember that rent isn’t the only cost involved when you’re looking for accommodation. Set a realistic budget, and work out what your bills will be if they’re not included before maxing out the budget on rent alone.

3. Location location location

If your new accommodation is a longgg trek to campus, you’re going to resent it. Try and pick somewhere that’s walking distance or close to public transport to avoid a long commute in.

4. In person viewings are key

PSA: don’t get catfished by a wide-lens camera and some edited “natural light”! Viewing in person will give you a feel for the road, the rooms and even the phone signal! If you’ve got the chance to speak to current tenants, they tend to be honest with you and give you alllll the tea.

5. Read the contract

The last thing you want to do is be stuck in a 12-month contract even though you plan to go home in the summer! Check for hidden fees, VERY high deposits or dodgy rules before you’re stuck in landlord hell. It’s always a good idea to get someone else to read through your contract before you sign too.

6. Health and safety is key

When you’re viewing the property, make sure you look out for smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and safe locks, ‘cos you can never be too careful! Student accommodation can be notorious for mould and damp! Make sure you scan the walls and windows during your viewings and question anything you’re not 100% on.
