Black History Month is a celebration of black history and culture. There are so many black women who are making their own history today. So, take a look at how these 6 women are making waves in the world right now.

Dina Asher-Smith

Dina Asher-Smith, an athlete, made history at the World Championships 2019. She became the first British woman to win a major global sprint title as she stormed to victory in 200m and broke a British record of 21.88 seconds. At only 23-year-old, she already who won silver in the 100m.

Kelechi Okafor

Kelechi is a dancer and actress who has used her online following to talk about issues affecting black British women, including misogynoir. She is also the founder of the dance fitness studio, Kelechnekoff Studio, where she runs twerking class to empower women. As well as all that she has an award winning podcast called ‘say your mind.’

Mama Cax

At the age of 14 this formidable woman was told she only had 3 weeks to live. After beating the odds in her battle, she has gone on to become a hugely successful fashion and lifestyle blogger. She is also an ambassador for Alleles, who create stylish prosthetic limb covers. Last year, she walked at New York Fashion Week which was a huge moment for inclusivity and diversity. She also recently walked in the Savage x Fenty show.

Candice Carty-Williams

You may know her best as the author of the hugely successful book, Queenie, that she released this year. The book follows Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures. In 2016 Candice also launched the Guardian and 4th Estate BAME short story prize, which was the first inclusive initiative of its kind in book publishing.

Aaron Philip

Aaron is the first black, disabled, trans woman to sign to a major modelling agency and all at the age of 17! Pretty incredible. Aaron has appeared in music videos for the likes of Miley Cyrus and has accumulated thousands of followers on instagram. Aaron has used her platform to challenge the lack of representation of wheelchair-users, especially in the fashion industry and has appeared in magazine spreads for i-D and Paper magazine, to name a few.

Nimko Ali

Nimko has been campaigning against female genital mutilation (FGM) for over 10 years and aims to end all FGM by 2030. She is also the co-founder of two charities, Daughter of Eve and The Five Foundation. She has recently released her first book entitled What We’re Told Not to Talk About (But We’re Going to Anyway), which contains a series of conversations with different women on subjects like sex, periods, pregnancy, masturbation and menopause to break down the stigma surrounding these subjects.
