Working holidays are one of the best ways to earn some cash while getting to explore the world at the same time. The experience that you pick up when you’re working abroad will also make a great entry on your CV. It'll provide you with unique skills that many employers value. There are quite a few countries that have working holiday visa schemes that allow you to live and work with very few restrictions. Here are a selection of the best ones.
1. Australia
Sun, sea, and some of the most incredible natural landscapes on the planet are a few of the reasons Australia is one of the world’s most popular working holiday destinations. Australia's scheme is relatively easy to access. With a huge list of nationalities accepted meaning tens of thousands of people head down under each year on these visas. Popular jobs include fruit picking, bar or coffee shop work and hospitality and temporary office roles. Citizens from certain countries are even allowed to extend their stay up to 2 years.
2. South Korea
South Korean food has steadily been taking the world by storm over the past couple of years with its delicious mash up of sour, spicy and sweet flavours. But there’s a lot more to this country than the food. Its capital Seoul is a modern, fast paced, fashion obsessed city, and further out in the more rural areas the natural beauty of the country is breathtaking. Translation and editing jobs, au pairing, hotel work, and perhaps, surprisingly voice acting are all popular positions for people with working holiday visas.
3. Canada
If you’re a snow baby then Canada may well be the ideal destination for you pick up your working holiday visa. People arrive in their droves to work the ski seasons on some of the world’s most famous slopes such as Whistler and Banff, and the best positions come with free accommodation and ski passes. If you’re not a boarder or ski bum then there’s plenty more to discover in Canada - it’s a vast country with fascinating culture and history, and pristine scenery.
4. New Zealand
New Zealand is a traveller’s paradise and is well known as one of the adventure capitals of the world. Its landscape of mountains, lakes and rugged coastlines go hand in hand with extreme sports such as climbing, rafting, skiing, bungee jumping, and skydiving. Road tripping and backpacking are a great way to explore the land where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies were shot. The strong economy means that jobs aren’t too difficult to come by.
5. Singapore
Singapore’s work holiday system is slightly more restrictive than others as it’s only open to students or graduates between the ages of 18 to 25. And the pass lasts for just 6 months. Despite the limited visa length, there are plenty of companies eager to take on overseas workers on short term internships and placements, particularly English speakers in the field of hospitality. From Singapore it’s easy to explore the surrounding South East Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and of course Malaysia.
