Break the ice with new housemates: 8 tips

Living with housemates you don’t know can be a little daunting! That’s why we’ve teamed up with The Mix to give you some tips and advice on how to break the ice…

1. Introduce yourself early on

Most people move into their student accommodation on the same day or weekend, so it’s great to introduce yourself early on when you spot them! Did someone say doorstop? It’s a great way to spot the newbies without a jumpscare!

2. Explore campus together

The best way to get to know your campus is to explore it! Bring your new housemates along to work out where the hotspots like the Student Union are.

3. Cook/share a meal together

What’s cooking? If you’ve accidentally made enough pasta to feed your entire halls, you might as well share it! If cooking gives you the ick, maybe keep it safe and stick to a takeaway instead.

4. Offer help

Is someone putting together a flatpack or trying to work out how to do laundry? Offer to help and figure it out together—you’ll definitely pass the vibe check.

5. Keep your shared spaces clean

No one wants to live in a total mess, so do your bit, take out the bins and keep your things clean. Start as you mean to go on, cos flat extensions do exist!

6. Arrange an activity night

Games night? Junkyard Golf? Spend some time getting to know your housemates with a fun activity or cosy night in.

7. Find your common interests

Spend some time trying to work out what your common interests are with your new housemates. Maybe you’re both foodies, or maybe you’re both into gaming—work it out and then you have conversation starters for daysss.

8. Respect their boundaries

Not everyone will be an extrovert ready to socialise, so make sure you respect your housemates’ boundaries and give them enough space to settle in, in their own way.
