You’ve filled out your wardrobe with summer essentials and grabbed a bottle of factor 50. The only thing left? To quench that thirst of yours, of course. We got in touch with DesignMyNight for their scoop on the most popular summer cocktails around. From tall flutes filled with frozen prosecco to Pina Coladas with a cheeky twist, there’s no way you’re sticking to plain old gin ‘n’ juice this year.
1. Frozen Prosecco Cocktails at Patterns - Brighton
Looking for an excuse to go gallivanting this summer? Patterns in Brighton have gone all out to transform their sea-facing terrace; it now resembles the famous South Beach Boulevard, and it looks incredible. It has leafy palm trees, a swimming pool effect floor and breath-taking views, but that’s not the only reason to start looking for your car keys. They’ve created the UK’s first ever range of ‘frosseco’ cocktails. Yup, you heard. Pick from an Aperol spritz slushie, a mojito royal slushie or a straight flute of frozen prosecco, and raise your glasses to a fizz-fuelled summer.
2. Pisco and Tonic at Dirty Martini - Cardiff
Dirty Martini is on the money when it comes to dreaming up new libations. So it doesn’t come as a major shock that they’ve knocked up another smashing list for you thirsty bunch to work through this summer. From rhubarb and spice to peach and grapefruit, you have five unique pisco and tonic cocktails to choose from, each one bursting with fresh fruity flavours.
3. Apples and Pears - London
Brick Lane might be known for its bustling curry houses, but there’s a cocktail bar hidden amongst the chaos, and it’s got an ace selection of summer cocktails for people in the know. We won’t point you towards our favourite cocktail at Apples and Pears (mainly because they’re all so great) but the Old Mary Rose is pretty up there. It’s made with gin, in-house violet lime sherbet and ginger ale. But the best bit has to be the garnish - each cocktail has a handful of sugary sherbet saucers resting on top. Sweet.
4. No. 197 Chiswick Fire Station - London
If you want summer cocktails in a beautiful setting, look no further than No. 197 Chiswick Fire Station. This Insta-worthy plot has a flower-filled terrace hidden outback, and a new cocktail menu to make you go weak at the knees. Made with Sipsmith Dry Gin, aromatic tonic, fresh kiwi and strawberries, we’d consider it a crime to leave this joint without trying their new summer tonic.
5. London Cocktail Club Monument - London
London Cocktail Club Monument might be a basement bar, but it’s brand spanking new and it’s shaking some smashing serves for summer. Cool down and avoid the sun’s rays with one of their jam jar daiquiri signature serves, or keep it PG with one of their mocktails, but whatever you decide to slurp on, don’t doubt it for a second - this is a top place to take a break from the sweltering heat (and to deal with your sunburn).
6. Be At One - Birmingham
Whether you’re gaga for gin or ravenous for rum, Be At One hold the key to unlocking all your fantasies this summer. With everything from 1920 classics to Kinder Bueno ice-cream cocktails roaming the pages of their menu, it’s a no-brainer if you’re drinking with a picky bunch. Overwhelmed by choice? Try hell in the pacific; it’s made with rum and a whole lotta love.
7. Pen & Pencil - Manchester
Who needs flights to the Big Apple when a slice of New York cool can be found in Manchester, via Pen & Pencil? This trendy bar has a killer selection of summer cocktails and a menu packed with towering burgers and fiery chicken wings that are ideal for soaking up any booze. Step out of your cocktail comfort zone and order one of their signature mixes - the Manchester iced tea marries gin, dandelion and burdock and lapsang souchong cordial. It might sound a little bizarre, but you’ll thank us one sip in.
8. Reverend JW Simpson - London
Every bar has a backstory, and Reverend JW Simpson happens to have a brilliant one. This quirky joint use to be the home of a mysterious man and his living quarters were only discovered after renovation works took place. Having discovered some new belongings of the tenant recently, the bar’s new cocktail menu has taken inspiration from some of his literary favourites. The Alabama colada is inspired by author Harper Lee, and is made with mint-infused Four Roses bourbon, Campari, fresh lime, pineapple and coconut cream, served over cracked ice; a twist on the classic, you’ll be ordering round two in no time.
9. Bangarang - London
Summer just isn’t summer unless a rooftop bar is part of your game plan. Bangarang is one of this summer’s hottest pop-ups and it’s gonna make all of your Disney dreams come true. Inspired by Peter Pan, you can lounge on clam seats, get refuelled at a Lost Boy’s Bar and you might just rub shoulders with Captain Hook aboard a pirate ship. Their drinks are pretty magical too, with mermaid shots served in seashells and Absinthe-heavy floating fairy cocktails stealing the limelight.
10. Barrio Brixton - London
Never short of South American sass, Barrio Brixton is one of the best party bars in London and its interiors are so bright you’ll probably need to whip out your shades when you pay it a visit. Their new set of cocktails are ideal for extinguishing your thirst too but the wake me up before you mango-go- go is bold in flavour with a tangy tropical twist. We might not be able to count on glorious weather in Britain, but bad weather will never rain on your parade at this quirky joint.
