Happy Challah Days!
When a holiday's nickname is "The Festival of Lights" you know it's about to be lit AF, so Happy Hanukkah everyone! Christmas might be a little bit more flashy and in-your-face, but Hanukkah is one Jewish holiday that packs a serious punch. How will you spend your 8 Crazy Nights?
Here's what we're looking forward to this Challah Day:
1. The Hanukkah Song
Adam Sandler changed the face of music forever (boldest/falsest statement ever made) when he took to the SNL stage and sang a Hanukkah song for the next generation. It's probably the most beloved song of holiday since "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" and it's chocked full of Sandler's ingredients for a very Happy Hanukkah. Finally, we can all rest easy knowing we're not the only kids in town without a Christmas tree.
Put on your yarmulke * Here comes Hanukkah * So much funukkah * To celebrate Hanukkah * Hanukkah is the festival of lights * Instead of one day of presents * we have eight crazy nights
2. The Menorah
We love us some tradition, so naturally, our favorite part of Hanukkah is the lighting of the Menorah. I suppose it's worth noting (for those that don't know) that Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates a real-life miracle. Long-story-short, we celebrate the miracle of a single night's worth of lamp oil that burned for 8 (crazy) nights. WOW! Each candle of the Menorah represents one of those nights. We can't wait to light the candle on one of these ornate Menorahs from BlueFly (you can also get them for free at most Temples), because when we were a kid-- lighting fire to anything (on purpose) was the ultimate holiday treat.
3. Haute Hannukah Looks
Don't worry! You can still attend all of those ugly Christmas sweater parties without feeling guilty about misrepresenting your faith. We're personally obsessed with these looks because unlike red and green, blue is a color that looks great on everyone!
4. I Made You Out Of Clay
Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel.... and you know the rest, even if you're not Jewish. We love this grown-up version of our favorite (only) Hanukkah game. We told you your Hanukkah was about to be LIT!
5. Jewish Gelt & Other Treats
When we were little, playing Dreidel was all about collecting as many shiny chocolate coins (called Gelt) as humanly possible. While we haven't been playing too much Dreidel in recent years (that's changing thanks to our new favorite version above) Gelt is still the best part of Hanukkah if you ask us. Chocolate 4E.
6. I Like You a Latke
Not sure if we've ever discussed how much we love food on this blog but JK LOL OBVIOUSLY FOOD IS BAE. While we're absolutely crazy for Matzo Ball Soup, the real standouts at any Jewish feast during Hanukkah are the Latkes (perfectly golden brown potato pancakes)! We all claim our Mom makes them best, but this recipe is dope because it is the most fun and this all Jewish acapella group called the Maccabeats is giving us life right now. Most Latkes are delicious BECAUSE of the toppings so gift your Mom/host this "Top o the Latke" gift bundle and enjoy.
7. Who's Up For Chinese?
Nearing the end of this list, we thought we'd pay tribute to the time-honored tradition of Jews eating Chinese food on Christmas Day. This is officially the biggest day of the year for Chinese restaurants, and one of our personal favorite holiday traditions. Enjoy those dumplings-- we hope you wash them down with some delicious Kosher wine and get really good seats at the movies after.
8. Sufganiyot
AKA jelly doughnuts! When do you get to eat doughnuts for dinner?! Never, actually, not even on Hanukkah. But they are a good dessert, after the latkes. Here are some unorthodox recipes we hope you will like very much.
