January 3rd is a beautiful, beautiful day in this country. It is the day that we can all gives thanks and praise for the most beautiful part of every day: sleepytime.
Yes, there is an unofficial day honouring everyone's favourite extracurricular activity. It is called the National Festival of Sleep and as far as we can tell there is no wrong way to celebrate it. Are you a side sleeper? Great! Have a little bed? Perfect! A big bed? That's also fantastic.
So, whether you're cuddling up with your partner, your BFF, your pet, or by yourself, here are some tips and tricks for getting the best sleep of your life—even if you're in J-Term hell.
1. Block It Out
Hello darkness, my old friend. Make sure you room is at peak darkness with help from a satin eye mask and blackout curtains. Now that you've removed all distractions, you can put all your energy into something really important—like, say, 24 straight hours of sleep.
2. Science, Bitch!
If something is good enough for NASA, it should be good enough for us too, right? This lightbulb is the same one that NASA uses to help astronauts catch some shut eye. It works by emitting a soothing light that fights off the "blues," i.e. short wavelength “blue” light that suppresses melatonin and makes it harder for you to catch Zs. Put this lil bulb in your bedroom and it'll help reduce those wavelengths by 50% and let you sleep like never before. And if you really want to take it to the next level, invest in this sleep app that was developed after the scientists behind it worked optimizing sleep in space for NASA's astronauts. This app helps track your sleep schedule and wakes you up (gently) with a 5 minute alarm scientifically created to help you wake up and not be a demon in the morning.
3. Melt Away
Cuddle buddies are really important here. Whether you choose to sleep solo or with a pal, make sure your sleep surface is at peak snuggliness with cozy, fluffy pillows that will only add to your comfort (bonus points if they're in the shape of your favorite food).
4. Gear Up
Make sure you dress for the part of sleeping goddess with PJs that get the message across. Let everyone know what time it is while ultimately remaining cozy with a silky-feeling pyjama set that's as on-trend and stylish as it is functional. And if you're more of an up-all-night-sleep-all-day gal, don't worry, we've still got you covered.
5. Get Your Beauty Sleep
Not only has lavender oil been proven to help relax and calm, but there are some serious beauty benefits from the fragrant flower, too. Pop some of this purifying toner on your face and wake up looking your best. And while, OK, we're still young and we might not "need" anti-wrinkle products, it can't hurt to slather some on as a preemptive strike. Lavender is also one of the key ingredients in this sleep spray (in addition to Vetivert and Wild Camomile) that will help you fall asleep faster, naturally. A little spritz on your pillow and you'll be nodding off in no time.
