5 study tips you need to know

Whether you’re grinding out an essay or cramming for exams, staying on top of studying is no joke. But don’t worry—these five study tips will help you actually retain information (instead of just staring at your notes hoping for a miracle).

1. Actually pay attention (and ask questions!)

We all know lectures can be longgg, but if you’re gonna show up, you might as well listen. Put your phone on DND, close that TikTok tab, and take proper notes. And if something doesn’t make sense, ask—your lecturers are literally paid to help you. No question is a silly question—half the class is probs grateful that you asked!

2. Study with your mates

Studying solo is great, but sometimes bouncing ideas off others is even better. If your housemates or coursemates are on the same module, team up! Quiz each other, explain concepts out loud, or even make memes about your subject—whatever helps the info stick.

3. Sleep is not optional

Pulling an all-nighter might sound like a power move, but it’s honestly the worst thing you can do. Your brain needs rest to actually absorb information. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep, and if you’re revising, keep your sessions short and focused. Power naps are also elite—20 minutes and you’re refreshed without feeling like you’ve time-traveled.

4. Make sure it’s sinking in

Ever spent an hour ‘studying’ only to realise you remember nothing? ‘Cos, same. To avoid this, pause every so often and check if you can actually explain what you’ve just read. Try teaching it to your mate (or even your pet) in simple terms. If you’re just mindlessly copying notes, you’re not really learning—so mix it up with mind maps, voice notes, or even doodles.

5. Take proper breaks

Burnout is real, and your brain needs breaks to function. Don’t feel bad about stepping away from your desk—schedule in snack breaks, go for a walk, or just vibe to your favourite playlist for a bit. Studying is all about balance: work smart, take breaks, and don’t let stress take over.
